Porcupine Ridge is situated on a private farm, 1km off the main Sabie/Hazyview
road and 5km from Sabie village. The old gold mining estate, comprising ten
homes, is self-managed and we have our own pure water supply, direct from a
mountain spring. There are lovely walks on the farm, through indigenous bush,
grasslands and plantations. A spectacular waterfall with a deep pool for swimming
is our secret treasure. We are lucky to have prolific birdlife and a variety
of wildlife. Click here to view a map of the area
.
Sabie nestles in a deep green valley surrounded by the northern Drakensburg Mountains.
The village has a colourful history dating back to the gold-rush of 1871, but
these days the forestry industry "green gold" is it's lifeblood. The
Sabie River has it's source here and it's upper reaches are a magnet for fly-fishermen
after the elusive 'rainbow'. Sabie is a favoured destination for both local and
international tourists, for it's waterfalls, magnificent scenery, abundant ameneties
and perfect location central to all the major attractions of the Panorama and
Lowveld. The area is a mecca for mountain bikers, with several major events being
held here. Sabie is Malaria free but Kruger Park visitors should take appropriate
precautions
.
Sabie has two Banks, Standard and First National, plus ABSA and Nedbank cash
machines. There are several petrol stations, supermarkets, chemists, doctors,
a dentist and a small hospital. Holidaymakers will find several craft and curio
outlets and a wide variety of eateries, from coffee shops and burger bars to
steakhouses, pubs and restaurants. View our Activities pages for more information
Visitors often comment on what a friendly place Sabie is, but unfortunately crime
is a worldwide problem and it is prudent to take common sense precautions. Lock
valuables out of site in the boot of your car, do not walk alone at night in
deserted areas, avoid showing too much flashy jewellery, camera equipment or
cash. As you move around the country seek advice from your hosts as situations
differ from area to area.
